Semifinalist status is based on scores on the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The nationwide wide pool of approximately 16,000 semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring students in each state, the release stated.
