A 33-year-old man was sentenced to prison Tuesday for selling fentanyl to another man at a Crystal Lake home, where police later found an additional 8.5 grams of fentanyl.
McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge sentenced Paul S. Benzinger, of Crystal Lake, to 6 1/2 years in prison for delivery of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. Benzinger accepted a deal from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office and pleaded guilty to the charges Tuesday.
Crystal Lake police were surveilling Benzinger’s home on July 21, 2020, in the 6100 block of Anvil Road, Crystal Lake, when they saw Benzinger sell about 1.2 grams of heroin to another man, court records show. Officers then pulled over the vehicle during a traffic stop and located the heroin inside the car. The man also told police that he purchased the heroin from Benzinger, according to court documents.
A search of Benzinger’s home yielded additional baggies of heroin, drug paraphernalia and several hundred dollars of cash, according to court documents.
At the time of his arrest, Benzinger was on mandatory supervised release for an unrelated 2018 conviction of possession with intent to deliver heroin.
