Joliet has 25 awards for neighborhood heroes

Joliet has so many neighborhood heroes that it will take two events to recognize them all.

Fourteen Neighborhood Hero Awards will be presented to homeowners at the City Council meeting on Tuesday. Eleven were presented at a council meeting on Aug. 3.

The city is a partner with Project Acclaim, which has been presenting the awards since 1985 to recognize Joliet homeowners who make a contribution to the city by the work they do in their yards.

“Neighborhood Here Award honorees have outstanding yards that include maintained lawns with flowers, shrubs, and decorative trees,” reads the proclamation honoring the 2021 recipients. “By showing great pride in their property, these residents demonstrate great pride in their neighborhood and in our city.”

And, they do it themselves.

“These people did their own work,” city Planner Jayne Bernhard said when the first group of awards were presented. “That’s part of the requirement to be nominated.”

Honorees are nominated by neighbors and others who admire the care they give their yards. Some never find out who nominated them.

“This is not hard work,” Annie Joyce Chandler of 532 Harwood St. said when receiving the award two weeks ago. “It’s just rewarding work. I love working in my yard.

Jane Favia, expressed a similar sentiment: “It’s very peaceful and relaxing to me.”

Favia and her husband, Ronald, who live at 1504 Baltz Drive, received an award.

Others recognized on Aug. 3 were Jay and Phyllis Ringo of 722 W. Marion St., Pauline Fuchs of 117 Dwight St., Howard and Suzanne Chan of 359 N. Raynor Ave., Nick and Maria Contos of 1200 Glenwood Ave., Mike and Sue Reilly of 1606 Jones St..

Raynor Ave., the Jacobo family of 423 Cornelia St., the Havelka family of 512 McDonough St., the Cruz family of 619 McDonough St.
