Juvenile to face criminal charges after posting threat against Hampshire Middle School on social media

A juvenile is expected to face felony criminal charges for posting a threat of violence against Hampshire Middle School on social media, according to a post on the Hampshire Police Department’s Facebook page Thursday afternoon.

The threat had been deemed “not credible” by District 300 on Wednesday night.

In one of two emails sent to parents on Wednesday, district officials said they were working with Hampshire police to investigate the threat and identify the source. Officials followed up with a second email Wednesday evening confirming that there was no danger to students.

“The District has confirmed there is no substantiated threat to student safety at Hampshire Middle School,” according to the email. “It is important to note that we take all threats, even those believed to have been made in jest, extremely seriously. This particular issue will be dealt with in accordance with our district guidelines and policies.”

According the Hampshire Police Department’s Facebook post, once identified, the juvenile admitted to creating the social media threat to investigators before the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized the criminal charges.

The district’s email and the police department’s social media post also stated that all Hampshire schools will have an increased security presence Thursday.
