Local Sports Digest: Ottawa Dolphins claim 1st, 2nd at swim meets

Marquette girls top Spring Valley JFK

The Marquette Academy girls basketball teams swept Spring Valley JFK, in the eighth-grade game winning 31-9 behind Anna Hjerpe’s 12 points and Hunter Hopkins’ 10. The 7s were also a winner, 39-2, as Morgan Collins popped in 12 points.

Marquette also had a three-game sweep over Ransom/St. Michael’s in Ottawa. Hjerpe scored 16 and Hopkins 15 in the eighth grade’s 41-24 win. Hopkins tossed in 12 as the 7s were a 39-12 winner and in the fourth/fifth-grade contest, MA won, 33-6 as Kinley Rick fired in 18 points and Jakobi Reed 11.

On Monday night, Marquette defeated Mendota Holy Cross twice, on the eighth-grade level 38-9 behind Hjerpe’s 10 points. The 7s pitched a shutout, winning 32-0 as Hopkins netted 12 points.

Shepherd girls take two from Fieldcrest

The Shepherd girls basketball squads were both winners in a recent twin bill with Fieldcrest.

In the seventh-grade game, Meredith Waldron notched 14 points and Ashlyn Ganiere 12 as the Rams (13-2) defeated FHS, 36-22. On the eighth-grade level, the Ottawans won 25-24 on a game-winning free throw by Ganiere with no time left. Mary Stisser led the Rams (12-3) with 10 points.

Dolphins 1st at Monster Splash, 2nd at Kishwaukee

The Ottawa Dolphins swim team placed first at the five-team Illinois Valley YMCA Monster Splash Invite and was second at a three-team meet at the Kishwaukee YMCA.

At the Splash, the Dolphins totaled 1,689 points to edge the IV Dolphins 1,633.5 behind first places by Brecklyn Jobst in 8U girls, Ethan Farabaugh in 8U boys, Henry Farabaugh in 10U boys, Finley Jobst in12U girls ans Quinn Wilkinson in 14U girls.

Second places went to Elizabeth Hansen in 10U girls, Cole Bressendorf in 10U boys and Lucas Farabaugh and Bo Weitl in 14U boys, while a third went to Lily Miller in 14U girls.

At the Kishwaukee Meet, the hosts were first at 1,055 points, followed by Ottawa with 796 and Illinois Valley 311.

Winners of three events were Ethan Farabaugh, Brecklyn Jobst and Quinn Wlkinson, while taking a pair of victories were Cole Bressendorf, Ryland Heaver, Finley Jobst, Daniel Marini, Gabriel Marini and Ellie Muller. Also, winning single events were Jeremiah Abernathy, Stella Andree, Tucker Ditchfield, Dawsynn Kettman, Aria Phillips, Griffin Sharp and Annabelle Threadgill.
