Manhattan residents invited to ask questions about fire district’s future

Residents will be able to ask questions of the Manhattan Fire Protection District chief next Friday.

The event comes just two weeks after the district announced it intends to consolidate with the Peotone Fire Protection District. Steve Malone, who has been serving as the head of both districts, said the consolidation will allow both departments to stabilize their finances while being able to provide adequate services to both communities.

Malone and other district staff will be at the Manhattan Fire Protection District station located at 100 Park Road in Manhattan from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 17.

“We’ve been pleased so far with the response that we’ve received from the Peotone and Manhattan communities about the potential benefits of consolidation,” Malone said in a statement. “But we also understand that there are likely residents who want to learn more about what a potential consolidation could mean for emergency fire, rescue and lifesaving services in their community. We’re happy to be on hand and available to answer questions or provide an overview to residents.”

No registration or RSVP is required to attend the event.

Malone and staff will host a similar event in Peotone next Wednesday.
