More winter weather on the way

MORRIS – More snow, high winds and cold temperatures are expected Friday, according to a winter weather watch issued Wednesday by the National Weather Service via the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency.

The watch includes a forecast of 1 to 2 inches of snow in the Grundy County area, with increasing accumulation to the north. The Rockford area is expected to get an additional 3 to 5 inches of snow. Wind gusts of up to 40 miles an hour are expected Thursday, with the potential for blowing snow and very low visibility. Snow is expected to begin accumulating late Thursday, and blowing snow is expected to continue into Friday morning.

Icy roads with flash freeze potential are among other dangers the National Weather Service warned of, with dangerous cold coming Friday through Monday, especially Saturday night into Monday, with wind chills below zero.

Expect hazardous road conditions with the snow and blowing snow. There is an increased risk of cold-related health hazards and roads becoming icy, as well as increased risk of freeze-up ice jams on rivers during the upcoming cold snap.

There is increasingly high confidence that a few to several inches of snow will accumulate along and north of Interstate 80 but lower confidence of the timing of any freezing rain and exact timing of any start as rain or mix to all snow. There is high confidence in some travel impacts Friday morning, although lower confidence in the magnitude of such impacts and how much area will be affected. The upcoming cold weather will be the coldest since January 2019 but is unlikely to be that extreme.
