Oswego School District seeking two students to serve as Board of Education ambassadors

The Oswego School District 308 Board of Education is seeking two high school students to serve as Student Ambassadors to the Board.

The Board of Education approved the positions in a unanimous ballot during a meeting on Tuesday, April 12.

According to the position description, the two ambassadors will be appointed annually by the board and will attend all regularly scheduled meetings. Term lengths will be determined by the board.

“The student representative will act in an advisory capacity providing student voice on issues brought before the board,” the position description reads.

Student ambassadors will not have any voting privileges and will not be able to participate in or attend executive sessions of the board, the description continued.

The duties of the student ambassador, the position description said, include attending all Board of Education meetings, attend – as requested as a member of the student body – Student Council meetings and Principal Advisory Council meetings, attending any professional development opportunities requested by the Board, serve as a student adviser to the Board, and to meet with their school’s principal prior to each Board meeting to provide a student report. The school’s principal will assist the student ambassador with the preparation of each student report.

A press statement issued by the district April 13 confirmed that the position is open to sophomore and juniors at Oswego East High School and Oswego High School, with one student to be chosen from each school.

Interested students must be enrolled as a full-time student for the 2021-2022 school year, in good academic standing, and able to meet state and school guidelines for extracurricular participation. Junior applicants who will be seniors when appointed are preferred.

“The Student Representative to the Board of Education is a representative for and to both, the Board of Education and the students of Oswego and Oswego East High School,” the statement read.

Two virtual informational meetings for current sophomores and juniors interested in learning about the application process will be held with Superintendent Dr. John Sparlin at 3 p.m. April 20 and 22. Those interested in learning about the requirements for the position and application process can contact the office of the superintendent at ustuder@sd308.org to receive a meeting link for the requested date and time.

The deadline to submit applications is May 14, 2021, to ustuder@sd308.org.
