Recent DeKalb shooting now ruled homicide as victim dies, police make arrest

DeKALB – A man who was shot in the torso during an incident on Ridge Drive a week ago has died, confirmed DeKalb Police Chief David Byrd. Police have made an arrest in the case, which they now consider a homicide.

Caeleb Dunlap-Milam died from injuries he sustained after he was shot in the upper torso during a shooting in the 800 block of Ridge Drive around 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, Byrd said. Dunlap-Milam had been transported by DeKalb paramedics to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital, and then was transferred to OST St. Anthony’s in Rockford, where he died earlier this week.

“The young man passed away mid-week,” Byrd said Friday. “And we do have a suspect in custody from that. No charges have been filed yet but we do have him in custody.”

Byrd said charges are pending for the suspected shooter, who’s identification has not been released.

Around 5:30 a.m. Oct. 3, DeKalb police responded to reports of shots fired in the 800 block of Ridge Drive, and when officers arrived, they found one man, later identified as Dunlap-Milam, with serious injuries outside.

At the time, Byrd said the shooting appeared to be “a targeted incident.”

Byrd said police found the victim outdoors, not inside a residential complex in the 800 block of Ridge Drive.
