State senator cancels town hall over venue’s vaccination policy

DIXON — State Sen. Brian Stewart is rescheduling a listening tour session to a different venue after finding out that Sauk Valley Community College requires proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test as part of its safety restrictions.

Stewart, R-Freeport, had planned to host a regional town hall with three other Republicans at 6 p.m. Thursday at Sauk’s Mathis Theatre, but the in-person event has been rescheduled to 6 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Dixon Elks Lodge, 1279 Franklin Grove Road.

“The vaccine-or-test requirement at the venue for its guests has the potential to severely limit who is able to attend my event,” Stewart said Wednesday. “I want to ensure that every constituent has the ability to have their voice heard and address the concerns that matter most to them, which is why I have decided to reschedule the event at a venue that would accommodate all constituents.

“My staff has worked hard to ensure this event protects the health and safety of all attendees and they will continue to do so for the rescheduled event.”

The rescheduled event will still feature state Sens. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, Dave Syverson, R-Rockford, and Win Stoller, R-Germantown Hills.
