Carter Schlegel, 18, of Sterling is one of Sterling High School’s February Students of the Month. His parents are Tim and Sarah Schlegel, and he has a brother, Bradley.
Favorite class? The service-learning class I took my junior year. Wanting to be a teacher myself, I was able to see the classroom from the teacher’s perspective.
Least-favorite class? Any class that correlated with science. I’m not now, and never will be, a science geek.
Favorite teachers: Tyler Gaumer and Taylor Jackson, because I felt like I connected with them either through sports or just a good relationship in the classroom.
School activities in which you participate: Bowling and golf all 4 years, and acted theater shows my sophomore year.
Civic, church, or other volunteer activities in which you participate: I volunteered at the United Way Food Bank and a couple of times at Granny Rose Animal Shelter.
What will you do after high school? I have committed to Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, to major in elementary education.
What is something you learned in high school that you think you’ll never use? Trigonometry. Nothing else comes close. I’m still confused of what the point of it is and when I’ll ever use it.
If you could change one thing about your school, what would it be? To have the school serve Portillos during lunch, because nothing beats a good chocolate cake shake.
If you could create any new class at your school, what would it be? There should be a Sports History class just as an elective.
What does it take to be a successful high school student? Forming great relationships with your teachers because when you do, a big weight is taken of your shoulders. Having those relationships makes school a lot easier, because you aren’t as stressed to accomplish something.
Do you have a job? I work at Emerald Hill Golf Course in Sterling. It’s amazing, because I get free golf out of it.
How would you describe your group of friends? They are determined, funny and energetic.
Who is your best friend? Corey Billings and I are childhood friends. Corey and I have a bond that will probably never be broken. Though he does have some flaws, like being a Cubs fan, he is just an overall great friend.
What do you do in your free time? I go to the golf course or bowling alley. I also play video games, although my mom might say I have an addiction.
What kind of music are you listening to? Literally any type of music, nothing specific.
If you could go anywhere in the world for free, where would it be? My options are very limited because I’m the pickiest eater there is, but if I could go anywhere, I would go to Hawaii. I know it’s a very basic answer but none of my family are beach type people, so I know we may never go there.
What is your favorite childhood memory? This may not be a favorite, but it is one that stands out a lot to me to this day. I was playing tag with a friend at Kilgour Park when I was young and I didn’t see the metal pole that was right in front of me. My forehead smacked it so hard. My parents and I never got it checked out, so I believe it probably knocked something loose.
What is the best way to cheer you up? I love to go out and play golf or any type of sport because it always calms me and gets me away from my problems.
What is your life’s philosophy? To be old and wise, you must be young and stupid.
Do you have any pets? A dog, Molly, a Pomeranian and German shepherd mix. She looks just like a fox.
What would you do if you received $1 billion all of a sudden? I would donate $9 billion to communities or organizations in need because there are people who need it a whole lot more than I do, and keep $1bilion because then I can go to any professional sporting event.
