Veterans Day commemorated on Nov. 11

Veterans Day is a U.S. legal holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars, and Veterans Day 2021 occurs on Thursday, Nov. 11.

In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day the following year, Nov. 11 became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day.

Veterans Day is always observed on Nov. 11 with speeches, parades, and church services across the United States and in many places the American flag is hung at half mast. A period of silence lasting two minutes may be held at 11 a.m.
