Wenona student wins Father Allen Scholarship for St. Bede

Violet Lopez is this year’s recipients of the Father Alan Scholarship.

Lopez was chosen from a list of eight students who were nominated by their schools.

This scholarship was started in 2003. It was initiated and supported financially by the class of 1961 to honor Father Allen Mattingly. Father Allen was a Benedictine monk at St. Bede who served both the community and the school for more than 40 years.

The winner of the scholarship receives a cash award of $2,000 toward the cost of tuition to attend St. Bede. It is a four-year scholarship, which makes it worth a total of $8,000 to the student attending all four years.

Rich Koehler, board member and the chairman of the selection committee, said the choice was a difficult one.

“All of the nominees had very strong credentials,” Rich said. “Violet, however, stood out, as every member on the committee listed her as one of their top choices.”

Lopez graduated from Holy Family elementary school with high honors maintaining a 4.0 grade point average during her last year. In addition to her scholastic success, she was active in many school activities. She was a member of the volleyball, basketball, softball and bowling teams. She was a member of the scholastic bowl team.

Lopez’s teacher said of her “Lopez’s leadership abilities shine in many way … she is the kind of person who sees a need and fills it without complaint or recognition”

Lopez lives with her family in Wenona.

Jim Dietz, a graduate of SBA class of ’61 said, “she is a great choice and the board is proud and happy to award her this well-deserved scholarship. We all wish her well and know that she will be a credit to the Academy.”
