New COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Will County appear to be stabilizing, per the most recent public health data.
The rolling average COVID-19 test positivity rate in Will County fell to 4.8% as of last Tuesday, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. One month ago, the positivity rate was around 7.5% when the highly contagious delta variant caused a spike in cases across the country.
The IDPH reported five more outbreaks of COVID-19 in Will County schools as of Friday.
JK Lukancic Middle School in Romeoville, Mokena Intermediate School, and Troy Middle School in Joliet had outbreaks of fewer than five cases among students in the classroom. Eagle Pointe Elementary in Plainfield had an outbreak of fewer than five cases among students and staff in the classroom.
Joliet West High School reported an outbreak of nine cases in its football program. The district also said 38 of its players were in quarantine, which led to the team to forfeit two of its games.
There was a rolling average of 126 COVID-19 patients in hospitals in Will and Kankakee counties, according to the IDPH. After nearly quadrupling within a month, new COVID-19 hospitalizations have leveled off somewhat over the past week.
One month ago, there were 86 COVID-19 patients in the hospital in the region.
Vaccinations for COVID-19 have continued at a rate of about 1,100 per day in Will County, according to the IDPH.
As of Friday, 54.7% of Will County’s nearly 700,000 residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
