An 18-year-old man from Woodstock was arrested by Illinois State Police on Sunday after Cary police say he stole a car from Rosati’s in Cary and crashed it on Interstate 90.
Luis A. Gonzalez-Garcia, 18, of the 300 block of East Judd Street in Woodstock, was charged with theft over $500 after he was arrested by Illinois State Police troopers Sunday, according to a news release from the Cary Police Department.
Cary police responded at 5:15 p.m. Friday to Rosati’s on Algonquin Road in Cary for a report of a stolen vehicle, according to the news release. The vehicle’s owner, an employee of Rosati’s, told police that he left the car unlocked and running to go inside the restaurant after returning from a delivery. While he was inside, someone came inside to tell him his car had been stolen.
Police said they used witness statements and surveillance video to get a description of two men who took the car.
On Sunday, Illinois State Police responded to a crash involving the stolen vehicle on I-90 near Elgin. Police said the Gonzalez-Garcia attempted to flee the scene but was caught. He was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates for evaluation following the crash.
The passenger of the vehicle is also accused of fleeing the scene in the crash, according to police, and they are still working to identify the man who was a passenger in the vehicle when it was stolen from Rosati’s.
The complaint filed in McHenry County court said Gonzalez-Garcia admitted to police that he took the vehicle from Rosati’s.
An attempt to reach the McHenry County Public Defender’s Office was not immediately successful.
In addition to the theft charge, Gonzalez-Garcia was also wanted on McHenry County warrants related to battery charges.
Cary police are continuing to investigate Friday’s theft.
