Yorkville police investigating theft of ‘several’ catalytic converters from business, one from vehicle

The Yorkville Police Department is investigating the theft of several catalytic converters on Oct. 14, both from a private vehicle and an area business.

Catalytic converters are exhaust emission control devices that convert toxic materials from exhaust.

Officers took a report of the theft of a catalytic converter from a vehicle at 11:26 a.m., Oct. 14, in the 1100 block of South Bridge Street. The second theft was reported at 7:14 a.m., Oct. 14, at a business in the 100 block of South Cannonball Trail.

Deputy Chief of Police Behr Pfizenmaier stated that it is currently “speculation” that the two incidents are connected, but the investigations are ongoing.

“Obviously it’s very suspicious to us that you’ve got two kind of unique crimes committed in your town,” Pfizenmaier said.

Though an exact monetary value was not determined for the stolen converters, Pfizenmaier stated that both crimes would be filed as felony theft.

Both investigations are ongoing. Those with information are asked to contact the Yorkville Police Department.
