DeKalb man arrested after home invasion, armed robbery

DeKALB – A DeKalb man was arrested Thursday after an apparent home invasion that ended with him pulling a knife on several people inside the residence, according to a DeKalb County Sheriff’s news release.

No one was injured during the incident, the release states.

Avery WL Jones, 20, of DeKalb, is charged with home invasion, armed robbery, trespass to residence and residential burglary. Police say he forced open the door to an apartment just before 5 p.m. Thursday in the 1300 block of North Annie Glidden Road, according to the release. If convicted of the most serious crime, armed robbery, Jones could face up to 60 years in prison.

Before he left the scene, police say Jones used a knife to threaten several people at the residence, and before he left, he took several items.

Jones then reportedly fled the apartment in a white SUV before deputies arrived to the apartment.

The deputies later learned Jones may have been hiding out in a residence in the 1200 block of State Street. Deputies found Jones and took him into custody without incident, the release states. DeKalb County Sheriff’s Lt. Jim Burgh said DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Jones a couple hours after the incident.

Burgh said DeKalb Police helped deputies identify Jones when he was found at a residence in the 1200 block of State Street.

Several of the stolen items and the knife used in the incident were at the residence.

Burgh said the stolen items were electronic devices, and said a white SUV was also parked at the residence.

Burgh said DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office gets a fair amount of calls to that area of North Annie Glidden Road, but not as many burglaries.

“This is certainly one of the most severe cases we’ve handled in a while in that apartment complex,” Burgh said.

Jones is being held at the DeKalb County Jail pending bond.
