The Salvation Army wants to help DeKalb County residents pay rent, utility bills

The DeKalb County Community Foundation has established a COVID-19 response fund, and awarded The Salvation Army of DeKalb County a $12,500 grant to help individuals and families directly impacted by COVID-19. Ideal Industries Foundation immediately matched that gift for a total of $25,000.

“This very generous gift is going to be used to prevent homelessness in our area,” said Major Angie Pennington, corps officer for The Salvation Army of DeKalb County. “Many residents have lost wages due to this pandemic and are concerned about the possibility of being homeless. This gift allows us to remove that worry.”

Over the next eight weeks, the grant will be used to help residents make rent or utility payments, keeping them in their homes during the already trying time. The Salvation Army has seen a 60% increase for financial assistance and a 40% increase for food support.

“The DeKalb County COVID-19 Response Fund represents a collaboration of local funders who worked to quickly deploy grant funds to trusted local organizations like the Salvation Army, who are providing critical and essential services to people most impacted by this pandemic,” said Daniel P. Templin, DeKalb County Community Foundation Executive Director. “We appreciate the efforts of all those who are providing a lifeline of support to some of DeKalb County’s most vulnerable individuals and families.”

The Salvation Army is providing pre-packed food boxes with curbside pickup from 9 am until noon Monday through Wednesday, and from 9 a,m until noon and 5 until 6:45 p.m. on Thursdays. Emergency assistance and social services for those with hardship due to COVID-19 are available with appointment by calling 815-756-4308.

“J. Walter Becker, the founder of IDEAL Industries, started the company over 100 years ago with an unshakable belief in IDEAL relationships with employees, customers, and the community in which IDEAL operates,” said Meghan Juday, Chairman of the Board of Directors, IDEAL Industries. “The IDEAL Foundation, funded by both the IDEAL family and the company, is pleased to carry out J. Walter’s values and support our communities in these unprecedented times. Most importantly, we give thanks to YOU, the non-profits, who are working tirelessly to help those in need during these uncertain times.”
