Update: Meijer representative responds to delayed opening in Sycamore

SYCAMORE – The long-awaited opening of the Meijer store off Peace Road in Sycamore has been delayed, and a representative for the store says though no opening date was ever set, the store plans to open in the coming months.

“We are still looking forward to our new Meijer supercenter opening in Sycamore this year, but do not have an opening date to announce at this time,” said Joe Hirschmugl, spokesperson for the Michigan-based retailer and grocer.

“Construction on the store has been completed, but there is still some work to do inside to complete the store set-up,” Hirschmugl said. “The resources required to continue preparation on the new store are being used to support other Meijer stores during these unprecedented times. We will continue to monitor the situation and plan to announce the official opening date in the coming months.”

The retail and grocer was slated to open this spring at 541 Puri Parkway in Sycamore, according to its website (which still alludes to a spring opening as of Friday afternoon), but municipal leaders say that date will likely be the summer now.

“The store was potentially going to be opening like in a month or so, I don’t remember the exact date,” said Nathan Schwartz, DeKalb County engineer. “But it sounds like maybe they are just a little bit behind. I don’t know if that means a day or two, a week or a month. I’m still trying to figure that out from the Meijer folks.”

During the DeKalb County Board meeting Wednesday, Schwartz announced the inactive traffic light which has been dormant for quite some time on Peace Road at Puri will be activated this week in front of Meijer.

“The intention was for the gas station to open ahead of the store,” Schwartz said. “The reason we’re turning on the traffic signals now is because we want traffic to get a couple of days used to those traffic signals before the Meijer gas station opens.”

Hirschmugl said the gas station, a 3,500-square-foot Meijer Express, will provide fuel, food and basic grocery items and will open May 7.

The traffic light will be turned on this upcoming week. The Meijer will also have a Starbucks cafe inside of it.
