The DeKalb County History Center is offering an opportunity for people to vote for their favorite object connected to DeKalb County history.
The center was planning to open its new exhibit, “History of DeKalb County in 100 Objects,” in April. But with that plan on hold, the center has launched a friendly competition where people can vote for their favorite object.
While the upcoming exhibit will feature 100 objects, the voting will include the top 16.
“Picking 100 objects was a challenge, but cutting it to 16 was even harder,” Michelle Donahoe, the center’s executive director, said in a news release. “However, due to our current situation, we had to go with objects with photos readily available. There will be a wider variety of items in the exhibit, but we still felt we had a strong group of items that tell interesting stories about DeKalb County’s history.”
The competition will end April 27 – National Tell a Story Day, and the winner will be announced April 28. The objects are arranged in brackets. The top two seeds are DeKalb Ag’s winged ear and the 1984 Olympic torch, both internationally recognized objects. The remainder of the objects were randomly selected and represent artifacts and historical places from throughout the county.
How does it work? Each day there will be two objects competing for your vote. The story behind the object will be accessible through the website https://www.dekalbcountyhistory.org/100-to-1/. There will be a brief description of each object, date of the individual competition, and the complete brackets identifying the different seeds. Participants can vote in polls set up on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. You get one vote a day.
Anyone can vote, but if you want to win you will need to sign up. Registration begins April 13. When you register, you will pick a winner. Those who correctly guess the winning object are eligible for the grand prize – free admission for four, personal tour of the exhibit and a $25 gift card to the history center gift shop.
If the winner lives out of town, they can enjoy a guided virtual tour using video conference technology. Consolation prizes for those who picked the winner but did not win the grand prize will receive $5 off a $15 purchase of admission or merchandise. Limit one per person.
