$1K scholarship created for two St. Mary pupils

SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Community Foundation announced the Caryl Steimel St. Mary’s DeKalb Scholarship Fund, which will provide two $1,000 scholarships for elementary school students.

The scholarships will go to one boy and one girl who are entering the fourth or fifth grade at St. Mary Catholic School in DeKalb.

Roger Steimel, Caryl’s widower, created the scholarship to honor her memory.

The Steimels married on April 27, 1963. Caryl was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church and member of the church choir.

Caryl was a nurse at St. Mary Hospital in DeKalb before raising her children with Roger on the family farm in DeKalb.

She was also a member of the DeKalb County Quilters Guild.

She died Aug. 31, 2018. Roger noted when his wife died that St. Mary Catholic School was important to her.

“Our children and grandchildren attended the school, which inspired her to support St. Mary’s in many ways,” he said. “This scholarship is another way for Caryl’s faith and support to continue.

Donations to the Caryl Steimel St. Mary’s DeKalb Scholarship Fund can be made online at dekalbccf.org/donate, or by mail to the DeKalb County Community Foundation, 475 DeKalb Ave., in Sycamore.
