A two-year-old child has been hospitalized for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head in Joliet, police said.
The child is still alive and he remains in critical condition Tuesday at Ascension Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.
At 12:16 p.m. on Tuesday, officers responded to a residence in the 300 block of Comstock Street for a report of a 2-year-old child who suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Joliet police Sgt. Dwayne English said.
Officers arrived at the residence, found the child inside and immediately began life-saving measures, English said.
“At this time, it appears that the incident occurred after the child located an unsecured handgun in a bedroom,” English said.
The child’s mother was home and is cooperating with the investigation, English said.
