5 of Sauk Valley’s ‘must-see’ events in 2022

The New Year is almost here. That means there will be plenty to do in the coming year. Here are five events to mark on your 2022 calendar.

1 Percussion Palooza. It’s all about the beat! This solo and ensemble drum competition takes place Feb. 27 at Rock Falls High School. It features exhibitions by a number of respected high school and regional percussion ensembles from throughout northern Illinois and eastern Iowa. The event is held in honor of Rock Falls native Louie Bellson, who performed with jazz greats Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey.

2 Sterling Car Show. This show is in its ninth year and will be held May 1 at the many municipal parking lots in Downtown Sterling. Who has the grandest car of yesteryear? Will the 1958 Chevy Bel Air again take the top prize? If you love vintage automobiles, here’s your chance to check out what’s under the hood of more than a hundred entrants.

3 Petunia Festival. Dixon’s premier event serves as a lead-in to Independence Day, with activities June 30 to July 3. The midway carnival returns to Lincoln Statue Drive. On Sunday, there’s the parade in the afternoon then fireworks over the Rock River, starting promptly at 9:30 p.m.

4 Amboy Depot Days. The car, truck and motorcycle show is just part of the fun that will be served up Aug. 25 to 28. The 50-50 raffle is one of the area’s biggest draws.

5 Autumn on Parade. If it’s the first weekend in October, then it’s time for Oregon’s signature crafting and farm market showcase. Gather at the Ogle County Courthouse Square and shop for the holidays or add to your home’s decor.
