Annual Operation Warm Chili Cook-off set for Sunday

DeKALB – It’s officially chili season, and local organizations are encouraging folks to bring their favorite stretch pants and head to the annual Operation Warm Chili Cook-off on Sunday to support ongoing efforts to give children coats for the winter.

The annual Cook-off is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1336 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb. The annual campaign helps provide seasonal clothing items to children in need throughout DeKalb School District 428.

Folks can enter the the contest and show off their favorite chili recipe by calling Firefighter Patrick Erickson at 630-308-2551 or Firefighter Noah Millard at 815-703-5782. Entries must be three to five gallons of chili. The deadline to enter is 8 p.m. Friday.

Voting for the best chili ends at 12:30 p.m. First place wins $100, second place wins $50, and third place wins $25.

Cost is $10 to taste all the chili entries and $20 to both enter the contest and taste the competition. Children 10 years of age and under get in for $5.

All proceeds go to benefit Operation Warm. This year’s goal is $3,000 for coats for the kids, and $750 has been raised so far. Every $20 provides a coat for a child in need.

The event is hosted by the DeKalb Fire Department, the DeKalb Classroom Teachers’ Association, Thrivent Financial, Knights of Columbus, and Jason Fowler of Compass Mortgage, Inc.
