Appointment of interim Sandwich fire chief on hold

SANDWICH – With members still in shock after the death of their fire chief, the Sandwich Fire Protection District Board is leaving the ranks of its firefighters unchanged for now.

The announcement came during the board’s meeting Thursday at the fire station at 310 E. Railroad St.

Jeff Beverage, president of the board, said everything will remain status quo when it comes to officer rank within the district after the sudden death of Sandwich Fire Chief Jason “Jake” Pruski last week. He said Sandwich Deputy Fire Chief Nathan King’s title still is deputy fire chief, but he will assume the chief’s duties for the foreseeable future.

Beverage said he was kind of surprised the question had been brought up. He said he didn’t think the board had even fully come to grips with the fact that Pruski has died.

“I think it’s going to be a little premature for us to make a decision on who’s going to be officially our chief at this point in time,” Beverage said. The comments were made after Beverage led a moment of silence for Pruski at the beginning of the meeting.

All three trustees, Beverage, Chuck Fish and Jeff Hyatt, were present for the public meeting.
