Batavia woman almost loses $11K to fraud

BATAVIA – A resident of the 600-700 block of Sylvan Place, Batavia, nearly lost $11,000 in a fraud – but realized it was a scam and stopped the payment – which was cash in a box ready to be shipped – according to a Batavia police report released after an open records request.

The woman received an email that was purportedly from Norton Security, a computer anti-virus company on Nov. 23 stating that $111.50 would be charged for its services, the report stated.

The woman called the number included in the email and said she didn’t want the service. The representative called her back and said they would refund the money, but needed her US Bank account number in order to refund her checking account, the report stated.

She provided the account number and the scammer logged into the account immediately to refund the money, the report stated.

But the amount refunded was $11,200, so the scammer told the woman it was an accidental transfer and she could return the money via the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, the report stated.

The woman said she didn’t know what Bitcoin was, and offered to send a check; the scammer said he could not accept a check, but would be able to accept cash, the report stated.

The scammer gave her an address and she went to her bank to get the $11,000 in cash, then went to a UPS store in Geneva to send the money, the report stated.

But after worrying that she had been defrauded, woman retrieved the box of money from the UPS store before it was shipped, taking back the $11,000, the report stated.

In a follow-up report on Nov. 26, police verified that Norton had not contacted the resident via email, the report stated.

The woman also provided police with the address where the money was going to be sent and the phone number. She called the number in the officers presence and left a voicemail stating the caller should have no further contact with her, the report stated.
