ROCK FALLS – A festival honoring late band leader, composer and musician Louie Bellson is being planned for the summer by the Rock Falls Tourism Board.
The Bellson Music Fest will be 2 p.m. June 18 at RB&W Park. It will be marked by performances that continue into the evening.
A news released issued Wednesday by Melinda Jones, director of Rock Falls Tourism, said that four bands are scheduled to perform. However, the names of the performers won’t be released until later.
Bellson died at age 84 in 2009. He was born and raised in Rock Falls, where his father ran a music store. Bellson later graduated from high school in Moline, where he was buried.
As a musician, Bellson gained global acclaim and is credited with the then innovative use of two bass drums in his drum kit.
The event is being organized along with Bellson’s surviving wife, Francine, and Josh Duffee, a music director from Davenport, Iowa.
