DeKALB -The DeKalb Black Lives Matter group is hosting a unity protest and march on July 4.
The rally starts at 1 p.m. Saturday at 1027 W. Hillcrest Dr. It is slated to run until 3 p.m., according to announcements made by the group on social media.
Since May 30, there have been daily protests throughout DeKalb County spurred by the death of George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was seen on video kneeling on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes. Chauvin was later fired, arrested and charged with murder.
In addition to the daily demonstrations, many of them in front of the DeKalb Police Department and recently the Cortland Police Department, the Black Lives Matter group has held and attended several town halls and brought forward a list of demands for municipal leaders to bring about change int he county. Demands revolve around racial inequality and injustice, specifically in relation to use of force and policing, housing, elections, crime and social service reform.
The city’s Human Relations Commission is also expected to meet Tuesday again virtually at 7 p.m. to compile a list of recommended policies addressing protesters’ requests, and the city council is expected to review them at their regular council meeting July 13.
