Bomb squad called during DeKalb police search for illegal pornography

DeKALB – Police called a bomb squad to Lincoln Tower on Wednesday when they uncovered suspicious material during a warrant search relating to possession of child pornography, police said.

The search warrant was conducted Wednesday morning after police were asked by the Illinois Attorney General’s office to assist in a child pornography case, DeKalb interim Police Chief John Petragallo said.

Petragallo said the case involved a tenant at Lincoln Tower apartments, 1100 W. Lincoln Highway.

“As a result of the … investigation, we conducted a search warrant of an apartment at [Lincoln Tower] and found evidence of child pornography and a suspicious substance,” Petragallo said.

Petragallo said the Kane County bomb squad was called as a precaution to investigate the substance. He also shed light on a loud boom that was heard around downtown DeKalb shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday.

“They collected the suspicious substance and destroyed it off-site,” Petragallo said.

DeKalb Police Cmdr. Steve Lekkas said no charges had been filed yet, but police were still questioning a person of interest, who was also the subject of the pornography search warrant.

Lekkas said there was no immediate threat to the public.

“We obviously did some stuff as a precautionary measure, but there’s nothing so far as immediate threats,” Lekkas said. “The offender is being questioned.”
