BURLINGTON TOWNSHIP – A Cortland man died in a vehicle crash after police reports say he swerved to avoid hitting a deer near Hampshire, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.
According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, deputies were dispatched to a single vehicle crash at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Peplow Road and Ellithorpe Road in unincorporated Hampshire. Sheriff’s officials said in the release the investigation suggests the red Ford Focus in the crash was southbound on Peplow Road approaching Ellithorpe Road when a deer crossed in front of the vehicle, which caused the driver to swerve and lose control.
The vehicle appeared to have rolled over at least twice before crashing into a utility pole, according to sheriff’s officials.
James D. Coffman, 50, of Cortland was named as the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, according to the news release. He was transported to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, per the release.
Sheriff’s officials said in the news release the crash remains under investigation.
