COVID-19 hospitalizations reach levels not seen since late last year, IDPH reports

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 18,942 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 78 additional deaths on Thursday.

The state administered 78,889 shots Wednesday, bringing the total to 18,853,953, IDPH reported Thursday.

It also has administered a total of 481,698 doses to 5- to 11-year-olds, an increase of 7,965 doses from the last update. As a state, 26.25% of Illinois children ages 5 to 11 have received at least one vaccine dose, and 17.4% are fully vaccinated.

The state received the results of 223,281 COVID-19 tests in the 24 hours leading up to Thursday afternoon. The state’s case positivity rate is 6.3%

Illinois has seen 2,021,302 total cases of the virus, and 27,435 people have died. The state has conducted a total of 43,209,451 tests since the start of the pandemic.

As of late Wednesday, Illinois had 4,271 COVID-19 patients in the hospital, the most since Dec. 28, 2020. Of those, 867 were in intensive care units, and 485 were on ventilators.

Vaccine update: As of Thursday, IDPH reported a total of 21,229,925 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been distributed statewide, with 18,853,953 vaccines administered.

As of the time this story was published, 7,664,655 of the population of Illinois have been fully vaccinated, or 60.16%. Illinois has a population of 12,741,080 people.

State data shows 2,887,662 booster doses have been administered, an increase of 49,377 doses from Wednesday’s update. Illinois’ total population now is 22.3% boosted.

There can be as much as a 72-hour delay in reporting from healthcare providers on vaccines administered.

Among Illinois residents 5 and older:

Fully Vaccinated: 8,113,411 (68%)

At Least 1 Dose: 9,101,362 (76.3%)

Among Illinois residents 12 and older:

Fully Vaccinated: 7,911,577 (73%)

At Least 1 Dose: 8,792,638 (81.1%)

Among Illinois residents 18 and older:

Fully Vaccinated: 7,339,633 (74.5%)

At Least 1 Dose: 8,158,306 (82.8%)

Among Illinois residents 65 and older:

Fully Vaccinated: 1,776,363 (86.9%)

At Least 1 Dose: 1,948,842 (95%)

Regional update: All 11 regions in the state are in Phase 5.

Regional data from the IDPH remains on a three-day lag.

The North Suburban (McHenry and Lake counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 7%. Currently, 15% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, McHenry County’s seven-day positivity rate average increased to 8.9%. Lake County, which does about two-thirds of the testing in the region seven-day positivity rate average rose to 6.3%.

Hospitalizations have decreased or remained stable five out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is down to a total of 227 COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The West Suburban (DuPage and Kane counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 8.3%. Currently, 18% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, Kane County’s seven-day positivity rate increased to 8.6%, and DuPage County climbed to 8.2%.

Hospitalizations increased nine out of the past 10 days in this region. The region remained at 407 total COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The South Suburban (Will and Kankakee counties) region’s positivity rate rose to 9.4%. Currently, 6% of ICU beds are available.

Hospitalizations increased eight out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to 236 total COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The North (Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties) region’s positivity rose to 9.3%.

Currently, 7% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, DeKalb County’s positivity rate increased to 9.1%, Lee County’s rate was 7.6%, and Whiteside County’s went down to 7.1%.

Hospitalizations increased each the last 10 days in this region. The region is up to 285 total COVID-19 hospitalizations.

The North-Central (Bureau, Fulton, Grundy, Henderson, Henry, Kendall, Knox, La Salle, Livingston, Marshall, McDonough, McLean, Mercer, Peoria, Putnam, Rock Island, Stark, Tazewell, Warren and Woodford counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 8.7%.

Within this region, La Salle County’s seven-day positivity rate increased to 6.4%.

Currently, 10% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations increased nine out of the past 10 days. The region is up to a total of 410 COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

Chicago’s positivity rate is 8.2%. Currently, 10% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations increased each of the last 10 days.

Suburban Cook County’s positivity rate rose to 7.5%. Currently, 10% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations increased 10 out of the past 10 days in this region.
