A 19-cent-a-gallon increase in the state motor fuel tax took effect Monday, but a survey of area fueling stations showed that fuel prices haven’t universally jumped.
However, it appears that at many stations, prices have moved higher. If price changes observed at some stations are any indication, the local price of fuel will be in the neighborhood of $3 a gallon.
At 8:30 a.m. Monday, the Shell station at 1400 DeKalb Ave. in Sycamore had a posted price of $2.70 a gallon (rounded to the nearest cent). An hour later, the price had jumped to $3 a gallon, matching the prices at BP stations seen around the area, including just down the road at 1615 DeKalb Ave.
The uneven price increases may reflect not only the increased state tax, but also increased demand for fuel ahead of the July 4 holiday. This year, AAA motor club predicts almost 49 million are planning to travel during the upcoming holiday, with more than 41 million of them traveling by car. That would be a record number of travelers for the holiday, about 2 million more than last year and the most ever recorded by the motor club.
However, while gas prices are likely to rise in Illinois, nationally prices have been declining. The average price of fuel last week was $2.66 a gallon, 19 cents lower than a year ago and 17 cents cheaper than during the Memorial Day holiday, AAA reported.
Here are the gas prices, rounded to the nearest penny, observed at stations around DeKalb, Sycamore and Cortland on Monday morning, between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. All prices are rounded to the nearest cent.
