DeKalb County COVID-19 case count climbs past 1,000 Monday; Pine Acres out of outbreak mode

The case count of the novel coronavirus passed the 1,000 mark on Monday, according to information released by the DeKalb County Health Department Monday.

The county, which doesn’t update numbers on weekends, reported 27 new cases on Monday, representing new cases reported over the past three days. Total cases rose to 1,022. The death toll remains at 32 countywide, and no new cases were reported in longterm care facilities. DeKalb’s Pine Acres Rehab and Living Center was removed from the website, as it’s not considered an active outbreak anymore after no new cases were reported since July 22.

As of Friday Pine Acres had 26 cases in staff members and 55 in residents, along with 12 deaths, marking its first case nearly two months prior. Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion in Sandwich is the last active longterm care facility listed on the county website with 21 cases in staff, 36 in residents and 11 deaths.

Among the new cases there were two in residents under 20, nine in their 20s, three in their 30s, two in their 40s, five in their 50s, and two each in their 60s and 70s.

In total, there are 115 cases in residents younger than 20, 268 in their 20s, 168 in their 30s, 138 in their 40s, 133 in their 50s, 76 in their 60s, 59 in their 70s and 65 older than 80.

According to county data, the city of DeKalb reports between 461 and 465 cases. There are 146 to 150 cases in Sycamore; 126 to 130 in Sandwich; 96 to 100 cases in Genoa; 56 to 60 cases in Cortland; 21 to 25 cases in Hinckley, 16 to 20 in Somonauk, Kirkland, Malta and Kingston; 11 to 15 in Waterman; and six to 10 in Shabbona. Esmond, Earlville and Maple Park each report one to five cases.

The Illinois Department of Public Health lists cases and tests performed by ZIP code, while the county health department lists cases by municipality. Numbers vary between state and health departments because of data lags.

The 60115 ZIP code, including DeKalb, had 456 cases reported and 7,802 tests administered (a positivity rate of 5.8%); the 60178 ZIP code, including Sycamore, had 158 cases and 3,344 tests (4.7%); the 60548 ZIP code, including Sandwich, had 2,940 tests and 190 cases (6.5%); the 60112 ZIP code, including Cortland, had 52 cases and 722 tests (7.2%); the 60135 ZIP code, including Genoa, had 90 cases and 1,154 tests (7.8%); the 60145 ZIP code, including Kingston, had 15 cases and 288 tests (5.2%) and the 60146 ZIP code, including Kirkland, had 23 cases and 400 tests (5.8%).

In total, IDPH reported 207,854 people in Illinois have tested positive for COVID-19, while 7,756 people have died statewide. As of Monday, 3,405,097 tests have been performed. The site also lists statewide recovery rates, calculated by recovered cases divided by the sum of recovered cases and dead cases. The statewide recovery remained at 95%.

As of last Friday, there have been 755 recoveries, with 240 cases in the recovery period, according to the health department. There have also been 20,904 tests run for a countywide positivity rate of 4.8%, down from 5.0% last week.
