SYCAMORE – DeKalb County State’s Attorney Rick Amato wants to keep his job for another four years. Late Tuesday evening, the Sycamore Republican announced he would be seeking reelection in 2020.
In a news release, Amato told voters that he had kept the promises he made three years ago when he first was elected to the office. He said he regularly hears from people concerned about harsh punishment of offenders and those who want to make sure offenders are held accountable.
“Although these might seem like competing interests, I believe that my work as your state’s attorney has proven that justice and fairness are not mutually exclusive, that we have a criminal justice system that treats people fairly and also holds people accountable for their actions,” Amato said in the news release.
Amato won handily in 2016, beating incumbent Richard Schmack by more than 7,462 votes in the general election.
On the campaign trail in 2016, Amato touted his support from local law enforcement, including endorsements from unions representing DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies and the Sycamore police. He promised to ensure violent criminals are charged appropriately and to keep drug dealers out of drug court programs meant for addicts.
Amato said that, while he is proud of his first-term record, there still is work to do, including diversion programs for mental health, juvenile justice and military veterans.
“These programs will emphasize justice and fairness, as well as public safety, and be operated mindful that your tax dollars are not an endless resource,” Amato said.
