DeKalb County’s congressional representatives were split on a resolution Tuesday “condemning President [Donald] Trump’s racist comments directed at members of Congress.”
Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, of the 16th District, said “characterizing an action as racist is not in order” with the House rules and voted no.
Kizinger represents most of DeKalb County, including DeKalb.
Meanwhile, 14th District Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville, joined fellow Democrats in supporting the measure, which passed 240-187, with four Republicans in support. Underwood represents eastern DeKalb County, including Sycamore.
“The president’s tweet telling my fellow Congresswomen to ‘go back to’ the countries they came from is racist, xenophobic and unacceptable,” Underwood wrote on Twitter.
Kinzinger has called Trump’s tweets wrong, adding “we as a nation have to demand better from our elected officials, on both sides of the aisle.”
On Sunday Trump, wrote on Twitter: “So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly …
“….and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how …”
“… it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!”
