EF-0 tornado in Kirkland confirmed as cause of damage to Walnut Grove Vocational Farm

KIRKLAND – The National Weather Service confirmed that Kirkland experienced an EF-0 tornado during Monday’s derecho thunderstorm.

The storm and tornado caused approximately $50,000 in property damage to DeKalb County Community Gardens (DCCG)’s Walnut Grove Vocational Farm in Kirkland. The farm’ two greenhouses received the heaviest amount of damage from the storm and will need to be rebuilt.

The brief tornado, which lasted from 3:54 to 3:57 p.m. Monday, crossed Buck Road and Pearl Street before lifting in a field east of Myelle Road. The tornado had estimated peak winds of 80 mph, traveled 3 miles in length and had a maximum width of 40 yards.

The National Weather Service has confirmed 15 tornadoes across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana due to Monday’s storm.
