CORTLAND – A gas leak on the north side of Cortland has Somonauk Road closed. Cortland fire and police departments are on the scen as a Nicor crew searches for the leak, officials said.
Assistant Fire Chief Mark Hendrick of the Cortland Fire Department said there were no evacuations of nearby homes but some residents had been told to keep their windows and doors closed.
He said it’s always a concern with a gas leak that it could ignite and then fire crews have to contend with a flame.
Somonauk Road from Tallgrass Parkway to Stonegate Drive remained closed at 12:15 p.m. as utility crews worked.
Hendrick said crews were digging to find the location of the leak to then shut it off. Hendrick said no one should lose gas service in the process.
Nicor and Metronet crews were on the scene, and Cortland police were blocking off traffic along Somonauk Road. Hendrick said their was no timetable yet on when the road would reopen.
