Genoa Food Hub to host free community holiday meal Thursday

GENOA – DeKalb County Community Gardens’ Genoa Area Community Food Hub will host a free community holiday meal Thursday, Nov. 19

Holiday meals will be available drive-thru style at The Hub, located at 415 W. Main St. in Genoa, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, or until meals run out.

A traditional holiday meal of turkey and trimmings will be prepared by Voluntary Action Center of DeKalb County.

Since opening in January 2020, the Genoa Hub has served more than 100 families in need each month. The number of residents coming to the Hub have increased due to COVID-19 impacts such as unemployment, underemployment, an unexpected medical or car bill or additional family members joining the household.

“Sometimes patrons shed tears when they visit our pantry,” GACFH Director Haleigh Hunger. “I always tell them, ‘No, we don’t do that here. We are here to support our community when you need us, there’s no shame in that.’ There are so many people in the same shoes, even me, sometimes.”

Since June 2020, The Hub has also been hosting monthly “pay-as-you’re-able” dinners open to all community members. Meals have been prepared by personal chef Rudy Galindo, Debbie Kottmeir of Distinctive Catering by Debbi and by Voluntary Action Center.

The Hub is also providing holiday meal boxes to their food pantry patrons for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This gift of holiday food was made possible by a fundraising event in October, spearheaded by Brian Wallace of Wakoh Wear in Genoa.

The food pantry at The Hub is open to Genoa and Kingston residents the first and third Mondays of every month and the second and fourth Tuesdays.
