SYCAMORE – Pipestone Veterinary Services, in conjunction with the Sycamore Hy-Vee and the “Give a Helping Ha” campaign, donated more than eight tons of pork to the Northern Illinois Food Bank, which serves area food pantries and soup kitchens.
The campaign began before Thanksgiving, according to a Pipestone news release.
Pipestone donated a pound of pork loin for each ham purchased at the grocery store.
The food bank picked up the donation, totalling 1,695 pounds, on Dec. 23.
Paired with the Pipestone holiday promotion, for each Hormel Cure 81 whole boneless ham purchased from Nov. 1 through Nov. 30 at Hy-Vee, customers received a free Honeysuckle white frozen turkey – 10 to 14 pounds, the release states.
Pipestone, a Minnesota-based veterinary service and pig management company, works with independent pig farmers throughout the Midwest. The company began the “Give a Helping Ham,” campaign in 2017. In the first two years, 205,000 pounds of pork were donated to food banks in the region, the release states.
Dr. Luke Minion, the chief executive officer of Pipestone, said protein remains a need for food banks, which serve food insecure families who may not know when they’ll next eat.
