Helpers wanted to bring Christmas to DeKalb kids

DeKALB – The DeKalb Police Department is looking for help to spread Christmas cheer to DeKalb children this holiday season.

The department is seeking donations for this year’s Heroes and Helpers toy drive in partnership with Target.

The children have the opportunity for a one-on-one shopping experience with a DeKalb police officer, who helps them choose what they want for Christmas and items for their family during a special shopping trip at Target on Dec. 8. As an extra holiday treat, participating children will also get to meet Santa and have their photo taken for no extra cost to the family.

The program is primarily funded through private donations, according to a news release from the department, and children who are chosen to participate in the Target giveaway are chosen by DeKalb School District 428.

Individuals and businesses are encouraged to donate. Anyone who donates $100 can submit the name of a child to be paired with a police officer. Checks can be made out to the DeKalb Police Department’s Benevolent & Protective Association, and dropped off or mailed to the DeKalb Police Department, 700 W. Lincoln Highway.

If you would like to learn more about the event or to make a donation, call Sgt. Chad McNett at 815-748-8439.
