Here's what's happening in DeKalb County on Veteran's Day

With Veteran’s Day approaching, here are a few things you can expect to see around DeKalb County to commemorate local troops and those who’ve served.

Free meals for veterans

The Lincoln Inn, Faranda’s and the DeKalb and Sycamore Elks Lodge are partnering to provide a free meal to local veterans and their families this Wednesday. According to a social media post, the event will take place at Faranda’s Banquet Center, 302 Grove St. in downtown DeKalb from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Meals will be packaged to-go due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and will include a sandwich, freshly baked bread, a fruit cup, chips and a cookie. Those wishing to participate should call ahead at 815-756-2345 to make their pick-up reservation.

Outdoor veterans celebrations

DeKalb

The annual Veterans Day Ceremony in DeKalb will be held outside at Memorial Park, at the corner of First St. and Lincoln Highway in DeKalb on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. The DeKalb American Legion Honor Guard will conduct the ceremony featuring speakers DeKalb Mayor Jerry Smith and State Rep. Jeff Keicher, R-Sycamore.

Sycamore

Family Service Agency, Sycamore Park District and Heartland Hospice will be hosting a Veterans Celebration to honor and recognize our nation’s veterans for their service and sacrifice.

The outdoor, socially distanced ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, the Sycamore Park Good Tymes Shelter. The event will include a brief ceremony and a pin and certificate presentation by Heartland Hospice.

Illinois Department of Public Health COVID-19 guidelines will be followed. Wearing a mask will be required at the event.

Veterans are welcome to participate in the celebration. Due to restrictions, seating is limited and RSVPs are required. To RSVP, call Melissa at 815-900-2285.
