High wind warning for Kane County tonight into tomorrow morning

The National Weather Service has placed Kane and other surrounding counties under a high wind warning starting at 6 p.m. tonight.

The warning goes through 6 a.m. Thursday. Winds will be between 30 and 35 mph with gusts possible up to 60 mph.

“A low pressure system that is back over the Eastern Rocky Mountains, that is not quite here yet, but will be moving into our area later this evening, which will be generating these winds,” said Zachary Wack, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Chicago.

“We could see tree branches coming down, power lines coming down as well, which can cause power outages,” he said. “In these situations it is good to be prepared with flashlights, batteries, and a full tank of gas just in case you need to get to a relative’s house that does indeed have power.”

Wack also notes it is important to make sure things around your yard are stable.

“Bring in any outdoor things that could be thrown around like lawn furniture, make sure anything that is outside is secure that can’t be brought inside that might be too big so it does not cause damage to you or your neighbors property,” he said.

According to www.cityofbatavia.net, officials have issued an alert asking residents to wait until 7 a.m. Thursday to place their garbage cans at the curb. They also urge citizens to secure any decorations and outdoor furniture that may blow away.

As of now, Geneva has not issued any alerts about trash pickup for tomorrow.

Kevin Stahr, communication coordinator, said that an alert will be posted on https://www.geneva.il.us/ If anything changes.
