Illinois COVID-19 cases continue to skyrocket with 16,581 new confirmed cases on Wednesday

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 16,581 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 66 additional deaths on Wednesday.

For Tuesday, the state administered 77,435 shots. Illinois also has administered a total of 473,733 doses to 5- to 11-year-olds, an increase of 8,209 doses from Tuesday’s update. As a state, 25.86% of Illinois children ages 5 to 11 have received at least one vaccine dose, and 17.08% are fully vaccinated.

The state received the results of 199,406 COVID-19 tests in the 24 hours leading up to Wednesday afternoon. The state’s case positivity rate is 6%

Illinois has seen 2,002,360 total cases of the virus, and 27,357 people have died. The state has conducted a total of 42,986,170 tests since the start of the pandemic.

As of late Tuesday, Illinois had 4,178 COVID-19 patients in the hospital. Of those, 867 were in intensive care units, and 451 were on ventilators.

Vaccine update: As of Wednesday, IDPH reported a total of 21,153,605 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been distributed statewide, with 18,775,064 vaccines administered.

As of the time this story was published, 7,655,874 of the population of Illinois have been fully vaccinated, or 60.1%. Illinois has a population of 12,741,080 people.

State data shows 2,838,285 booster doses have been administered, an increase of 48,734 doses from Tuesday’s update. Illinois’ total population now is 22.3% boosted.

There can be as much as a 72-hour delay in reporting from healthcare providers on vaccines administered.

Among Illinois residents 5 and older:

Fully Vaccinated: 8,102,308 (67.9%)

At Least 1 Dose: 9,080,296 (76.1%)

Among Illinois residents 12 and older:

Fully Vaccinated: 7,903,312 (72.9%)

At Least 1 Dose: 8,774,826 (81%)

Among Illinois residents 18 and older:

Fully Vaccinated: 7,332,206 (74.4%)

At Least 1 Dose: 8,141,800 (82.6%)

Among Illinois residents 65 and older:

Fully Vaccinated: 1,775,386 (86.9%)

At Least 1 Dose: 1,946,693 (95%)

Regional update: All 11 regions in the state are in Phase 5.

Regional data from the IDPH remains on a three-day lag.

The North Suburban (McHenry and Lake counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 6.7%. Currently, 13% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, McHenry County’s seven-day positivity rate average increased to 8.8%. Lake County, which does about two-thirds of the testing in the region, is reporting a rolling average of 5.8%.

Hospitalizations have decreased or remained stable four out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is down to a total of 230 COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The West Suburban (DuPage and Kane counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 7.9%. Currently, 17% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, Kane County’s seven-day positivity rate increased to 8.3%, and DuPage County’s sits at 7.8%.

Hospitalizations increased 10 out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to 407 total COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The South Suburban (Will and Kankakee counties) region’s positivity rate is 9%. Currently, 7% of ICU beds are available.

Hospitalizations increased eight out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to 235 total COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The North (Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties) region’s positivity is 9.2%.

Currently, 6% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, DeKalb County’s positivity rate is 8.8%, Lee County’s rate decreased to 7.5%, and Whiteside County’s went down to 7.3%.

Hospitalizations increased 10 out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to 283 total COVID-19 hospitalizations.

The North-Central (Bureau, Fulton, Grundy, Henderson, Henry, Kendall, Knox, La Salle, Livingston, Marshall, McDonough, McLean, Mercer, Peoria, Putnam, Rock Island, Stark, Tazewell, Warren and Woodford counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 8.6%.

Within this region, La Salle County’s seven-day positivity rate increased to 6.3%.

Currently, 9% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations increased nine out of the past 10 days. The region is up to a total of 403 COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

Chicago’s positivity rate is 7.7%. Currently, 9% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations increased for 10 out of the past 10 days.

Suburban Cook County’s positivity rate rose to 7%. Currently, 10% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations increased 10 out of the past 10 days in this region.
