Illinois ends streak of 27 consecutive days of increased COVID-19 hospitalizations

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 10,012 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 76 additional deaths Sunday.

The seven-day rolling average of Illinois’ positivity rate decreased to 11.3%. The state received the results of 92,437 COVID-19 tests, in the 24 hours leading up to Sunday afternoon.

Illinois has seen 656,298 cases of the virus, and 11,506 people have died. The state has conducted 9,801,419 tests since the start of the pandemic.

As of late Saturday, Illinois had 6,072 COVID-19 patients in the hospital, ending a streak of 27 consecutive days of hospital admission increases for COVID-19.

Of those hospitalizations, 1,179 were in intensive care units, and 589 were on ventilators.

Regional update: Currently, all 11 of the state’s health regions are under additional mitigation measures from the IDPH, and as of Friday, all 11 regions are under Tier 3 mitigations.

Regional data from the IDPH remains on a three-day lag.

The North Suburban region (McHenry and Lake counties) has seen four days of positivity increases and five days of hospital admission increases. The region’s positivity rate decreased to 14.2%. Currently, 19% of medical/surgical beds are available and 25% of ICU beds.

Within this region, McHenry County’s seven-day positivity rate average decreased to 17.8%. Lake County, which does about two-thirds of the testing in the region, is reporting a rolling average of 12.9%.

Finally, within the Lake/McHenry region, there are 51 available, staffed ICU beds out of 187 total.

The West Suburban region (DuPage and Kane counties) has seen five days of positivity increases and three days of hospital admission increases, a decrease in both metrics. The region’s positivity rate decreased to 14.5%. Currently, 16% of medical/surgical beds are available and 18% of ICU beds. Within this region, Kane County’s seven-day positivity average is at 16.4%, and DuPage County is at 13.5%.

Finally, within the DuPage/Kane region, there are 75 available, staffed ICU beds out of 373 total.

The South Suburban region (Will and Kankakee counties) has seen five days of positivity increases and five days of hospital admission increases, a decrease in both metrics. The region’s positivity rate decreased from 20.1% to 19.8%

Currently, 14% of the region’s medical/surgical beds are available and 17% of ICU beds, below the state’s minimum threshold of 20%.

Finally, within the Will/Kankakee region, there are 30 available, staffed ICU beds out of 162 total.

The North region (Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties) has seen three days of positivity increases and five days of hospital admission increases, a decrease in both metrics. The region’s positivity rate decreased from 18.2% to 17.1%. Currently, 26% of medical/surgical beds are available and 23% of ICU beds.

Within this region, DeKalb County’s positivity rate decreased to 13.8%, Lee County’s rate decreased to 16.6%, and Whiteside County’s rate dropped to 20.6%.

Finally, within this region, there are 48 available, staffed ICU beds out of 179 total.

The North-Central region (Bureau, Fulton, Grundy, Henderson, Henry, Kendall, Knox, La Salle, Livingston, Marshall, McDonough, McLean, Mercer, Peoria, Putnam, Rock Island, Stark, Tazewell, Warren and Woodford counties) has seen four days of positivity increases and seven days of hospital admission increases, a decrease in both metrics. The region’s positivity rate decreased from 16.1% to 15.1%. Currently, 28% of medical/surgical beds are available and 20% of ICU beds.

Within this region, La Salle county’s seven-day positivity rate decreased to 17.7%.

Finally, within this region, there are 59 available, staffed ICU beds out of 257.

Chicago has seen four days of positivity increases and four days of hospital admission increases, a decrease in both metrics. The region’s positivity rate decreased to 14.3%. Currently, 20% of medical/surgical beds are available and 20% of ICU beds.

Suburban Cook County has seen six days of positivity increases and seven days of hospital admission increases, a decrease of both metrics. The region’s positivity rate decreased to 14.9%. Currently, 22% of medical/surgical beds are available and 19% of ICU beds.
