MOUNT CARROLL — Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will be having a free household hazardous waste collection event 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 11 at the Highway Garage Building, 10735 Mill Road, Mount Carroll.
It is one of nine such upcoming collections organized by the Illinois EPA at sites across the state. it allows residents to safely dispose of unused or leftover hazardous products commonly found in their homes.

Items that residents are encouraged to dispose of at the events include chemical cleaners, oil-based paints, thinners, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, kerosene, weed killers, insecticides and pesticides, old or outdated medication, and similar hazardous household products. Fluorescent and other high-intensity discharge lamps may also be brought to the collection.
Items that will not be accepted at the collection events include latex paint, explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, agricultural chemicals, and business wastes.
Rockford also hosts a year-round hazardous waste collection spot from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays at the Rock River Reclamation District, 3333 Kishwaukee St., Rockford.
For safe transportation of household hazardous waste, residents are asked to pack household hazardous waste items in a disposable box, keep like chemicals together and separate unlike chemicals, secure lids and make sure containers are not leaking. These boxes should be placed in an empty trunk of a vehicle and away from passengers during transport. On-site personnel will remove the household hazardous waste the vehicle.
