Joliet plans sale of downtown parking deck to John Bays

A Joliet City Council committee will review a plan to sell one of the city’s two downtown parking decks to developer John Bays.

The city would sell the Scott Street parking deck for $151,000, according to the plan to be reviewed Tuesday.

The deal outlined in the plan would preserve 50 spaces for public parking and another 20 for residents of the nearby Louis Joliet Apartments. Bays also would be required to honor parking arrangements for residents of the Auditorium Building condos and existing parking tenants.

The remainder of the deck would be available for Bays’ tenants at his downtown properties.

Bays owns about a dozen buildings downtown.

The deck built in 1977 needs $915,000 in repairs, according to a staff memo on the plan.

The Economic Development Committee will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall to review the proposal.

This is a developing story. Check for updates.
