U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, voiced his support for a motion to recognize and support the work of U.S. Border Patrol agents, saying they have been “villainized” in debates over immigration.
Kinzinger spoke in support of a motion to recommit, which amended a bill, H.R. 3239, to impose requirements and standards in the care of migrants in the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The motion passed the House, which marked the fourth procedural win by Republicans to amend Democrat-led legislation, according to a news release.
“Without question, we are facing a crisis on our southern border and as such, our CBP facilities are overcrowded and overwhelmed, and lacking the resources or personnel,” Kinzinger said on the floor of the House this week. “Our CBP agents are overworked.”
He spoke of his experiences while deployed to the border with his Air National Guard unit this year.
“I didn’t go in a windbreaker to get a photo-op, or start a livestream to score political points,” he said. “What I saw truly opened my eyes to the crisis at hand and the shortcomings our CBP agents face with their limited resources.”
Kinzinger told of hearing how agents gave their last water bottles to dehydrated migrants and said the crisis was taking an emotional and physical toll.
“We have placed an unprecedented burden on our CBP agents, asking them to handle some really tough things, and for that, they’ve recently been villainized,” he said.
