MALTA – Kishwaukee College new food pantry is helping its hungry students reach their academic goals.
Michelle Rothmeyer, vice president of student services, said the college is committed to serving its students.
“Studies show that hunger and food insecurities prohibit students form achieving their college goals,” she said. “Our students have also shared with us their concerns, which is why we decided to bring a food pantry to campus.”
Kody’s Cupboard, located in the student involvement office, was developed to provide supplemental resources to alleviate hunger and meet basic needs for the Kishwaukee College campus community. The food pantry is open Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to a Kishwaukee College news release.
In addition to helping students fill their stomachs, the pantry will also provide personal care products to any student, regardless of need. Students, including GED and ESL students, are eligible for items in the pantry.
Kishwaukee College’s Board of Trustees approved the pantry with a unanimous vote.
Kathy Spears, board secretary, said it’s one way to take from students the stress from going to college.
Kody’s Cupboard is accepting donations of unopened, nonperishable food items, baby food and personal care products. Food donations can be dropped off at the student involvement office – C1120 – on the Kishwaukee campus.
