Munson, Corder win IESA titles
At the Class A IESA State Wrestling Championships contested over the weekend at DeKalb’s Convocation Center, Ottawa Shepherd’s Mayson Munson at 70 pounds and Sandwich’s Cooper Corder at 112 captured IESA State championships, going 4-0.
Munson opened with a pair of pinfall victories – in 29 and 44 seconds – then won a 21-8 major decision in the semifinals to advance to the title match. There, he earned a 4-2 decision over Coal City’s Jake Munsterman for the IESA championship.
For Sandwich, Cooper Corder won an IESA title as well, going 4-0, including an 11-0 major decision, an 8-2 decision and a 4-2, sudden-death decisioning in the semifinals. Corder then earned an 8-0 major decision over Seneca’s Beau Thompson for the title.
Thompson’s second-place run included three wins – all via pinfall – to earn his spot in the championship match. His Seneca teammate, Raiden Terry, added a fifth-place.
Sandwich also received a pair of fourth-place finishes from Aiden Sinetos (75 pounds) and Shane McGuane (70), and a sixth courtesy of Lucas Brown (65).
The area’s other state qualifier to place was Marseilles’ Alex Schaefer (155), who went 3-3, including three consecutive victories, all via pinfall, to finish sixth.
Marquette seventh-grade spikers finish 4th
At the Class 7-1A IESA State Girls Volleyball Finals, Marquette Academy (22-2) suffered its only two losses of the season Saturday – 25-8, 25-7 to eventual champ Augusta Southeastern and 25-12, 25-14 to Kewanee Visitation – to finish fourth.
Anna Hjerpe served two aces in the loss to Southeastern. Against Visitation, Hunter Hopkins tallied two aces, with Kinley Rick adding another.
The Crusaders’ seventh-grade roster included Hjerpe, Hopkins, Rick, Eugenia Craig, Giada Pattelli, Kelsey Cuchra, Morgan Collins, Amelia Gaughan, Taylor Gamons, Carissa Blood and Emily Ryan-Adair.
