Michigan man who shot at 2 Oglesby officers ruled to psychiatric facility

A Michigan man once charged with attempted murder for shooting at two Oglesby police officers in 2020 was ruled Thursday to be not guilty by reason of insanity.

Peter Bergsma sat for a brief hearing during which prosecutors asked Chief Judge H. Chris Ryan to send Bergsma to prison even though two court-appointed psychiatrists concluded Bergsma was insane.

However, Ryan said the twin evaluations left him with no real alternative. He settled on a finding that means Bergsma will head not to prison but to a secure psychiatric facility run by the Illinois Department of Human Services.

The NewsTribune will update this story with more information.
